VFD Output Measurement — Why True-RMS Is Non-Negotiable

2026年06月08日

An average-responding meter lies on a VFD output. True-RMS is the only way to get real numbers.

The VFD Measurement Trap

Variable frequency drives are everywhere — pumps, fans, conveyors, HVAC — and they all produce a chopped, pulse-width-modulated output that fools ordinary meters. VFD output measurement with an average-responding meter can read 10-20% wrong, leading you to chase phantom faults or miss real ones. True-RMS measurement is the only way to get numbers you can trust.

1. Why Average-Responding Meters Fail Here

An average-responding meter assumes a clean sine wave and applies a fixed scaling factor. A VFD output is anything but sinusoidal, so the assumption breaks and the reading is simply wrong. True-RMS meters compute the actual heating value of the waveform regardless of its shape.

2. Measuring Output Current

  • Use a true-RMS clamp on the motor leads, one conductor at a time.
  • Check phase balance across all three output legs.
  • Capture inrush at start with the inrush function.
  • The EK-G645 is true-RMS with AC + DC and inrush capture.

3. Measuring Output Voltage

  1. VFD output voltage is PWM — a true-RMS meter reads the fundamental heating value.
  2. Some meters offer a low-pass / VFD mode to filter carrier noise.
  3. Compare line-to-line voltages for balance.

4. What the Numbers Tell You

  • Unbalanced output current points to a motor winding or connection fault.
  • Output current far above nameplate suggests overload or a mechanical bind.
  • Rising current over time can indicate bearing wear.

5. Safety and Practical Notes

  • VFD outputs carry high-frequency content — keep leads short and away from drive electronics.
  • Measure on the motor side for true motor current.
  • Beware reflected-wave voltage spikes on long motor cables.
