True RMS Digital Clamp Meter — Why It Matters for VFD and Solar Loads

The 40 % Lie

Plug an average-responding clamp meter onto the output of a 50 kW VFD and it will read about 60 % of the actual current. The internal averaging circuit assumes a perfect sine wave — the chopped DC bus output looks nothing like that. A true RMS digital clamp meter integrates the actual heating value of the waveform, regardless of shape, and gives you the number that matches your conductor sizing tables.

1. What "True RMS" Really Means

RMS = root-mean-square. The meter samples the current 4000+ times per second, squares each sample, averages the squares, then takes the square root. The result is the equivalent DC current that would dissipate the same heat in a resistor — exactly what your cable rating is based on.

2. Where True-RMS Is Mandatory

• VFD motor outputs (any drive made after 2005).
• Solar inverter AC output (THD up to 5 %).
• UPS output during battery backup.
• LED lighting feeders (high crest factor).
• EV charger AC input.

3. Crest Factor Spec — Read It Carefully

True-RMS only works if the crest factor headroom is enough. A true RMS clamp meter rated CF=3.0 at full scale handles 99 % of real loads. CF=2.0 will clip on LED drivers; CF=1.5 is useless for anything but pure sine.

4. AC + DC True-RMS

Solar combiner output and battery storage systems mix AC ripple with DC. A meter that does AC-coupled true-RMS only will miss the DC component. The EK-G645 measures AC RMS, DC, and DC + AC RMS in one mode — call it total-RMS — which is the right answer for hybrid loads.
