Three-Phase Rotation Verification Before Motor Connection
2026年06月08日
Reverse rotation destroys pumps and compressors in seconds. A 5-second rotation check prevents it.
The Five-Second Check That Saves Equipment
Connect a three-phase motor with two phases swapped and it runs backwards. For a fan that is an annoyance; for a pump, compressor, or conveyor it can mean cavitation, seal failure, or mechanical destruction within seconds. Three-phase rotation verification takes five seconds and prevents an expensive mistake.
1. Why Rotation Matters Per Load Type
- Centrifugal pumps: reverse rotation can run dry and destroy seals.
- Screw and scroll compressors: reverse rotation damages the mechanism quickly.
- Conveyors: reverse rotation can dump or jam material.
- Fans: usually just reduced airflow, but still wrong.
2. Source-Side Rotation Check
A phase sequence indicator confirms the rotation of the supply before the motor is connected.
- Connect the three leads to L1, L2, L3 at the supply.
- The indicator shows clockwise (correct) or anticlockwise sequence.
- If reversed, swap any two phases at the supply terminal.
- Re-check to confirm correct sequence.
3. Motor-Side Rotation Check
Some indicators verify motor terminal rotation by spinning the shaft by hand, confirming the motor's own phase sequence matches the intended direction before power-up.
4. Non-Contact Options
- Non-contact phase sequence detectors read rotation through insulation.
- Useful where bare terminals are not accessible.
- Faster and safer for repeated checks.
5. Document and Standardise
- Record the verified rotation on the commissioning sheet.
- Mark cables to preserve sequence for future work.
- Make the check a mandatory step in the connection procedure.
EK Recommendation
EK phase sequence detectors offer both contact and non-contact rotation verification with clear directional indication. Combine with the EK-G645 clamp to confirm balanced running current after start. Talk to EK service teams.
