Switchboard Commissioning Checklist — Electrical Tests Before Energising

Energising an untested switchboard risks a flashover. This checklist covers the pre-energising tests.

Never Energise an Untested Board

Closing the main breaker on a freshly built switchboard without a commissioning test is how flashovers happen. A disciplined switchboard commissioning checklist verifies every electrical fundamental before the board sees voltage, protecting both people and the asset. EK engineers use this sequence on acceptance jobs.

1. Visual and Mechanical

  • All connections torqued to specification and marked.
  • No tools, swarf, or debris left inside the enclosure.
  • Correct cable terminations and labelling.
  • Doors, interlocks, and earth bonds mechanically sound.

2. Insulation Resistance

Test phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth with the board isolated and electronics disconnected.

  1. 500 V or 1000 V test for LV boards.
  2. Record each phase combination separately.
  3. Pass criteria per IEC 60204 / local code.

3. Earth Continuity and Bonding

  • Low-resistance continuity from every metallic part to the main earth bar.
  • Main earthing electrode resistance verified.
  • The EK-C300 measures earth resistance and bonding.

4. Phase Rotation

Confirm correct phase sequence at the incomer and at each three-phase outgoing way, so connected motors run in the right direction.

5. Functional Checks

  • Protection relay settings verified against the coordination study.
  • Interlock and trip circuits proven.
  • Metering and indication confirmed.
  • Busbar joint resistance measured with a micro-ohmmeter where accessible.

6. Documentation

Record every measured value against its limit, with instrument serial and calibration reference. The commissioning report is the legal record of due diligence and the baseline for future maintenance trending.
