Substation Battery Bank Testing — Keeping DC Backup Reliable

2026年06月08日

When the grid fails, the battery bank runs protection and control. Testing keeps that backup trustworthy.

The Backup Everything Depends On

A substation's battery bank is the last line of defence: when AC fails, it powers the protection relays, breaker trip coils, and control systems that keep the grid safe. A battery bank that fails silently is discovered only at the worst possible moment. Substation battery bank testing verifies that this DC backup will perform when called upon.

1. Float and Charger Voltage

  • Measure the overall bank float voltage against the charger setting.
  • Confirm the charger maintains the correct float and boost levels.
  • A wrong float voltage shortens battery life or undercharges the bank.
  • The EK-F598 DMM measures DC voltage accurately.

2. Individual Cell / Block Voltage

  1. Measure each cell or block voltage at float.
  2. A cell reading low relative to its neighbours is weakening.
  3. Record all cells for trend comparison.
  4. Replace outliers before they drag down the string.

3. Inter-Cell Connection Resistance

Loose or corroded inter-cell links add resistance that limits discharge current and generates heat. A micro-ohm or dedicated battery-resistance measurement of each link finds them. Compare each link against the others and the baseline.

4. DC Ripple and Earth Faults

  • Excess AC ripple on the DC bus indicates a failing charger or open cell.
  • Measure ripple with a true-RMS clamp or DMM AC range on the DC bus.
  • Check for DC earth faults, which can cause spurious trips.
  • The EK-G645 AC/DC clamp reads DC load current and AC ripple.

5. Discharge / Capacity Considerations

The ultimate test is a timed discharge against the duty cycle, confirming the bank can deliver its rated backup time. This is done at longer intervals and requires careful planning so the substation is not left unprotected.

6. Documentation

  • Record float voltage, cell voltages, link resistances, and ripple.
  • Trend against previous tests to spot decline.
  • Attach calibration references for the instruments used.

EK Recommendation

Use the EK-F598 for DC and cell voltages and the EK-G645 AC/DC clamp for DC load and ripple. Talk to EK service teams for a DC-system maintenance bundle.
