Buying the wrong clamp meter wastes the budget. Five questions narrow it down to the right configuration.

The Five Configuration Questions

Before you commit to any professional clamp meter for sale, run through five configuration questions. EK service teams help buyers translate "I want a clamp meter" into the specific instrument that fits the work.

Question 1: What Current Range?

  • Service van (residential / light commercial): up to 600 A AC.
  • Industrial maintenance: up to 1000 A AC + DC.
  • Substation / heavy industry: up to 1200 A AC + DC.
  • EK-G645 covers all three with 1200 A AC + DC.

Question 2: What Jaw Size?

Jaw must encircle the largest single conductor or bus bar you measure. 30 mm jaw = up to 100 mm² cable; 52 mm jaw = up to flat bus bars common in MV switchgear. The EK-G645 has 52 mm jaw — fits substation bus.

Question 3: AC Only or AC + DC?

  1. AC only: residential, lighting, AC motor service.
  2. AC + DC: solar combiner, EV charger, battery DC bus, traction.
  3. If you ever touch solar or batteries, AC + DC is mandatory. EK-G645: AC + DC.

Question 4: True-RMS or Average-Responding?

True-RMS for VFDs, dimmer loads, harmonic-rich currents. Average-responding only for pure sine wave (rare today). The EK-G645 is true-RMS standard.

Question 5: What CAT Rating?

  • CAT III 1000 V: distribution circuits at panel.
  • CAT IV 600 V: service entrance, transformers, outdoor lines.
  • If you ever measure upstream of the main breaker: CAT IV. EK-G645: both.
