Phase Sequence Detector for Motor Reversal Prevention
2026年04月22日
Why every motor swap-out needs a phase sequence check: cost of reverse rotation and 60-second field procedure.
The Cost of a Reversed Motor
A pump motor wired with reversed phase sequence runs backward, often pumping nothing, cavitating the impeller, or backflowing process fluid. Compressors with reversed rotation can damage internal valves in seconds. Conveyors and machine tools may injure operators or destroy product. Total damage from a single reverse-rotation start has reached six figures in petrochemical plants. A 60-second phase sequence check before energizing prevents all of it.
How Detectors Work
A phase sequence detector connects to the three line conductors and indicates rotation direction (ABC or ACB) plus phase loss. Two technologies dominate:
- Contact (probe) type: Crocodile clips touch live bus or terminal screws. Most common in low-voltage panels.
- Non-contact (capacitive) type: Sensors clip over insulated conductors and read electric field. Ideal for medium-voltage and live-line work where opening the panel is not allowed.
Field Procedure
- Verify the upstream breaker is closed and live indication is present
- Connect the detector L1–L2–L3 to the motor side of the disconnect, observing color code
- Read the rotation indicator. Light or arrow shows ABC or ACB
- Confirm against the motor nameplate and machine direction marking
- If reversed, swap any two phases on the load side and re-test
Common Mistakes
- Connecting on the source side instead of load side after a swap
- Forgetting to re-test after panel modifications, even if the upstream supply is the same utility feed
- Trusting the cable color code without verification—field re-pulls are common
Safety
Phase sequence work is on energized equipment. Wear arc-flash PPE rated for the available short-circuit current. Use only CAT III or CAT IV detectors with ratings above the system voltage. EK phase sequence indicators carry CAT IV 600 V certification and include automatic phase-loss detection.
