Phase Sequence Indicator: Verifying Three Phase Rotation Safely
2026年04月21日
Use a phase sequence indicator to verify three-phase rotation before energizing motors, pumps, and compressors safely.
Why Phase Rotation Matters
Reverse phase rotation can spin a motor backward, damaging compressors, pumps, conveyors, and any equipment with directional mechanical loads. After every cable change, transformer swap, or generator transfer, technicians must verify rotation before re-energizing the load. A phase sequence indicator provides an unambiguous answer in seconds.
How the Instrument Works
Three test leads connect to phases L1, L2, L3 of the supply. Internal logic compares the relative timing of the three voltages and lights a green LED for ABC (correct) sequence or a red LED for ACB (reversed). Modern non-contact models read sequence through cable insulation, eliminating the need to expose conductors.
Test Procedure
- Verify the meter is rated for the system voltage (e.g. CAT IV 600 V).
- Connect leads in marked order to L1, L2, L3 of a de-energized circuit using insulated probes.
- Energize and observe the indicator.
- If sequence is reversed, swap any two phases and re-test.
Safety Considerations
Always wear arc-flash PPE appropriate to the system. Use insulated probes and a finger guard. Confirm the meter has been tested against a known reference within the last year.
Choosing the Right Model
- Contact type: lower cost, very reliable, requires conductor access.
- Non-contact type: faster, safer, ideal for switchgear and bus duct.
- Combined sequence + motor rotation: verifies both supply sequence and actual shaft rotation in one tool.
EK / ETCR Recommendation
EK phase sequence detectors include both contact and non-contact models with audible and visual indication, plus motor rotation verification for commissioning teams.
