Megohmmeter (Insulation Resistance Meter): How to Test Electrical Insulation with 250V to 5000V Test Voltages
2026年04月16日
A complete guide to megohmmeters and insulation resistance meters. Learn how different test voltages from 250V to 5000V are used to test motor windings, cables, transformers, and switchgear insulation.
What Is a Megohmmeter and Why Is Insulation Testing Critical?
A megohmmeter (commonly called a megger or insulation resistance meter) is an instrument that measures the resistance of electrical insulation by applying a controlled DC voltage and measuring the resulting leakage current. Healthy insulation should present very high resistance (measured in megohms or gigohms), while deteriorated insulation shows progressively lower resistance values that indicate moisture ingress, contamination, thermal damage, or material degradation.
Regular insulation resistance testing is the most widely practiced form of electrical preventive maintenance. By trending insulation resistance values over time, maintenance engineers can detect gradual deterioration and schedule corrective action before insulation failure causes equipment damage, production losses, or safety hazards. International standards such as IEEE 43, IEC 60204, and NETA MTS specify insulation testing requirements for various types of electrical equipment.
Understanding Test Voltage Selection
The test voltage applied during insulation resistance measurement must be appropriate for the rated voltage of the equipment under test. Using too low a voltage may not stress the insulation sufficiently to reveal defects, while excessive voltage can damage healthy but aged insulation.
For low-voltage equipment rated up to 250V, a 250V test voltage is appropriate. The EK-C344A provides test voltages of 250V, 500V, and 1000V with an insulation resistance range of 0.5 megohm to 10 gigohm, making it versatile for low-voltage motor, cable, and switchgear testing. For equipment rated 250V to 1000V, a 500V or 1000V test voltage is standard. The EK-C344B extends to 2500V test voltage with a 1 megohm to 50 gigohm range for medium-voltage applications.
Higher voltage equipment requires proportionally higher test voltages. The EK-C346A delivers 2500V test voltage with 0.1 megohm to 200 gigohm range, while the EK-C346B provides 5000V with 0.1 megohm to 1000 gigohm range. Both models feature lithium battery power for extended field use and 2mA short-circuit current for safe testing.
Absorption Ratio and Polarization Index: Advanced Diagnostic Tests
Simple spot readings of insulation resistance provide valuable information, but time-resistance tests offer much deeper diagnostic insight. The absorption ratio (DAR) compares resistance readings at 30 seconds and 60 seconds, while the polarization index (PI) compares readings at 1 minute and 10 minutes.
The EK-C348A (2500V) and EK-C348B (5000V) include built-in absorption ratio and polarization index measurement, automating these important diagnostic tests. Good insulation shows increasing resistance over time as capacitive and absorption currents decay, producing DAR values above 1.25 and PI values above 2.0. Deteriorated or contaminated insulation shows flat or decreasing resistance over time, indicating that maintenance intervention is needed.
These time-ratio tests are particularly valuable for large motors, generators, and transformers where simple spot readings may not reveal developing problems. The automated measurement eliminates timing errors and ensures consistent, repeatable results across different operators and test sessions.
Choosing the Right Megohmmeter Model
For general-purpose insulation testing on low-voltage systems, the EK-C344A with its 250V/500V/1000V test voltages handles most commercial and industrial maintenance needs. When working with medium-voltage equipment, the EK-C344B adds 2500V capability. Both models include AC voltage measurement up to 600V for safety verification before testing.
For dedicated high-voltage insulation testing, the EK-C346A (2500V) and EK-C346B (5000V) provide higher megohm ranges with lithium battery power for all-day field operation. When absorption ratio and polarization index testing is required for motor and transformer diagnostics, the EK-C348A and EK-C348B add these automated diagnostic functions.
All models feature a 1mA or 2mA short-circuit current limit that protects both the operator and the equipment under test. The instruments automatically discharge the test specimen when measurement is complete, ensuring safe handling after testing.
