Inrush Current Measurement for Transformer Energization

2026年04月22日

Capture transformer inrush current safely: trigger setup, sample rate, and protection coordination guidance.

Why Inrush Matters

When a power transformer is energized, magnetizing inrush current can reach 8–12 times rated current and last several cycles. Mis-coordinated protection trips on inrush instead of riding through it, causing nuisance outages and unnecessary maintenance investigations. Field measurement of actual inrush profiles is the only reliable way to set the second-harmonic blocking and pickup of differential or overcurrent relays for the specific transformer in service.

Instrument Requirements

  • Sample rate: at least 10 kS/s per channel to resolve the first half-cycle peak
  • Memory: deep enough to record at least 20 cycles after trigger
  • Trigger: pre-trigger buffer of 0.5–1 s to capture the moment of switching
  • Current sensor: Rogowski coil preferred for non-saturation behavior

Field Procedure

  1. Install Rogowski coils on each phase of the transformer primary
  2. Connect voltage taps at the same point
  3. Configure the analyzer for waveform capture with a current rise trigger set above maximum load current but below expected inrush
  4. Coordinate with operators to switch the transformer; the analyzer will capture the event
  5. Repeat 3–5 times at different points on the source voltage waveform

Interpreting the Capture

Plot the per-phase current waveform together with voltage. The first peak height, the decay envelope, and the second-harmonic content are the key parameters. Worst-case inrush usually occurs when the breaker closes at voltage zero with residual core flux of opposite polarity. The 2nd harmonic content during inrush exceeds 20%; during faults it stays below 5%, which is the basis for harmonic restraint.

Protection Setting Implications

Pickup current must be above the highest measured first-cycle peak across all tests, with margin. Time-overcurrent curves should be selected so that 8× rated current rides through for at least the duration of the longest measured inrush envelope. Differential relays require enough 2nd-harmonic blocking to prevent operation on the captured profile.

Reporting

EK PQA80 power quality analyzers export inrush captures as time-aligned voltage and current waveforms in COMTRADE format, directly importable into protection setting tools.
