Equipotential Bonding Resistance Tester: Verifying Lightning Protection and Grounding Bonding Systems

2026年04月16日

Understand equipotential bonding resistance testing for lightning protection and grounding systems. Compare portable and smart models with Bluetooth and USB for building and industrial bonding verification.

What Is Equipotential Bonding and Why Does It Need Testing?

Equipotential bonding is the practice of electrically connecting all metallic components within a building or facility to create a common reference potential. This includes structural steel, metal piping, HVAC ductwork, cable trays, equipment enclosures, and lightning protection conductors. The purpose is to eliminate dangerous voltage differences between metallic parts during lightning strikes, fault conditions, and static discharge events.

Bonding resistance testing verifies that these connections are intact and have sufficiently low resistance to perform their protective function. Standards such as IEC 62305 for lightning protection and IEC 60364 for electrical installations specify maximum bonding resistance values, typically ranging from 0.2 ohm for critical connections to several ohms for supplementary bonding. Regular testing ensures that bonding connections have not degraded due to corrosion, vibration, thermal cycling, or physical damage.

Portable Bonding Tester: EK-C370A

The EK-C370A is a compact portable equipotential bonding resistance tester designed for efficient field testing. With a resistance range of 0.001 milliohm to 400 kilohm and maximum test current of 1.2A, it covers the full spectrum of bonding resistance measurements from tight metallic connections to higher-resistance supplementary bonds.

The instrument achieves an accuracy of plus or minus 0.05 percent full scale plus 10 digits, providing the precision needed for reliable pass/fail decisions against standard requirements. Type-C data interface supports modern connectivity, while 9999-group data storage accommodates even the most extensive testing programs. The 7.4V 2600mAh lithium battery ensures extended operating time in the field.

Smart Bonding Tester with Voltage Measurement: EK-C370 and EK-C370C

The EK-C370 (2026 model) integrates bonding resistance measurement with AC/DC voltage measurement up to 1000V in a single instrument. The resistance range of 0.0 milliohm to 400.0 kilohm with 2A maximum test current provides higher energy delivery for breaking through surface contamination on test connections.

USB interface and Bluetooth communication enable seamless data transfer to computers and mobile devices for reporting and record-keeping. The 600-group data storage accommodates systematic testing programs with organized data management.

The EK-C370C adds a waterproof instrument case for maximum durability in adverse field conditions, along with lithium battery power for all-day operation. The rugged construction makes it particularly suitable for outdoor testing of lightning protection systems, fence grounding, and industrial facility bonding where exposure to weather and rough handling is expected.

Application Areas

Lightning protection system testing is a primary application for bonding resistance testers. Lightning protection standards require periodic verification of all bonding connections in the lightning protection system, including down conductors, air terminals, ring conductors, and connections to the grounding system. Low bonding resistance ensures that lightning current flows safely to earth without creating dangerous side flashes.

Building electrical installation testing verifies the integrity of main and supplementary bonding conductors that protect against electric shock. These tests are required during initial installation verification and periodic inspection of electrical systems. The bonding resistance tester quickly confirms that all metallic services (water pipes, gas pipes, structural steel) are properly bonded to the main earthing terminal.

Industrial facility bonding in hazardous areas requires verified low-resistance bonding to prevent static charge accumulation and potential ignition of flammable atmospheres. Regular bonding resistance testing is a safety-critical maintenance requirement in chemical plants, refineries, grain storage facilities, and other locations where explosive atmospheres may be present.
