In a three-phase distribution panel, single-phase loads should be spread evenly across all three phases. When they are not, the heavily loaded phase overheats, the neutral carries excess current, and energy is wasted in extra losses. Distribution panel load balancing starts with measuring each phase's current and ends with redistributing circuits to even them out.

1. Measuring Phase Currents

• Clamp each phase conductor at the main and record the current.
• Clamp the neutral — high neutral current signals imbalance or harmonics.

1. Calculate the average of the three phase currents.
2. Find the maximum deviation of any phase from the average.
3. Imbalance % = (max deviation / average) × 100.

3. Why High Neutral Current Is a Warning

In a balanced linear system the neutral current is near zero. A high neutral current means either load imbalance or triplen harmonics from electronic loads. A true-RMS clamp on the neutral distinguishes the magnitude; a harmonic check identifies the cause.

4. Correcting the Imbalance

• Map which circuits sit on which phase.
• Move single-phase circuits to even out the load.
• Re-measure after each change to confirm improvement.
• Document the final balanced configuration.
