Digital Phase Angle Meter: Accurate Voltage, Current, and Phase Measurement for Power Systems
2026年04月15日
Understand how digital phase angle meters measure voltage, current, phase angle, frequency, and power factor in electrical systems. Compare dual-clamp, three-phase, and multi-function models for different applications.
What Is a Phase Angle Meter and Why Is It Important?
A digital phase angle meter (also called a phase volt-ampere meter) is a precision instrument that simultaneously measures AC voltage, current, and the phase relationship between them. The phase angle between voltage and current is a fundamental parameter in AC power systems, directly determining the power factor, which indicates how efficiently electrical energy is being used.
Phase angle measurement is essential for power system commissioning, protective relay testing, transformer testing, meter calibration, and energy efficiency analysis. Incorrect phase relationships can indicate wiring errors, transformer polarity problems, capacitor bank malfunctions, and power quality issues that affect equipment performance and energy costs.
Dual-Clamp Phase Angle Meters: EK-D400 Series
The EK-D400 measures AC voltage, current, and the phase angles between two voltages, two currents, or a voltage and current pair. With a compact clamp jaw of 7.5mm diameter, it is designed for precise measurement on smaller conductors and instrument transformer secondary circuits. The voltage range extends to 600V and the current range to 20A, with phase angle measurement from 0 to 360 degrees.
The EK-D400A enhances this with additional frequency, phase sequence, power, and power factor measurements, plus a USB interface for data transfer. This model provides a more complete picture of electrical system behavior, making it valuable for energy auditing and power quality assessment in addition to basic phase measurement.
For larger conductors, the EK-D402 features a 40mm diameter clamp jaw capable of measuring currents up to 600A. This large-jaw model is essential for direct measurement on main power conductors in industrial facilities where current levels exceed the capacity of standard 7.5mm jaw instruments.
Three-Phase Measurement: EK-D430 and EK-D432
The EK-D430 extends phase angle measurement to simultaneous three-phase operation. By using three clamp sensors, it measures voltage, current, phase angle, frequency, phase sequence, power, and power factor on all three phases simultaneously. The standard 7.5mm clamp jaw and 20A current range make it suitable for instrument transformer secondary circuit measurements and low-current applications.
The EK-D432 provides the same three-phase measurement capability with a larger 40mm clamp jaw and 600A current range, enabling direct measurement on primary power conductors in industrial and utility applications.
Advanced Multi-Function Model: EK-D440
The EK-D440 represents the most advanced handheld phase angle meter in the range, adding harmonic analysis capability to comprehensive three-phase measurement. It measures voltage, current, phase angle, frequency, power, and harmonics from the 2nd through 20th order on all three phases.
The 5-inch touchscreen color display provides clear visualization of measurement data, phasor diagrams, and harmonic spectra. Lithium battery power ensures extended field operation, while USB and Bluetooth connectivity with a mobile app enables real-time data sharing and remote monitoring. The harmonic analysis function is particularly valuable for identifying power quality issues caused by non-linear loads such as variable frequency drives, LED lighting systems, and switched-mode power supplies.
Wireless Three-Phase System: EK-D448
The EK-D448 takes three-phase measurement to the next level with wireless synchronization between phase sensors. This eliminates the cable connections between clamp sensors, making it practical to measure phases that are physically separated by significant distances, such as in large switchgear lineups or outdoor substations.
Beyond standard electrical measurements, the EK-D448 includes wireless PT (potential transformer) verification, PT burden measurement, CT burden measurement, three-phase unbalance testing, and harmonic analysis. GPS satellite timing ensures precise synchronization between the wireless sensors. The 5-inch touchscreen, lithium battery, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity complete the professional feature set.
Choosing the Right Phase Angle Meter
For basic phase angle measurement during relay testing, meter calibration, and wiring verification, the EK-D400 dual-clamp meter provides accurate, cost-effective results. When additional parameters like power factor, frequency, and phase sequence are needed, the EK-D400A adds these capabilities with USB data transfer.
For three-phase power system assessment, the EK-D430 or EK-D432 (large jaw) provides simultaneous measurement of all phases, eliminating the need to measure each phase separately. The EK-D440 is the optimal choice when harmonic analysis is required alongside standard phase measurements, while the EK-D448 wireless system offers the ultimate in measurement flexibility for complex installations and large-scale testing programs.
