Digital Ground Resistance Tester: How to Measure and Verify Grounding Systems with 2/3/4-Wire Methods
2026年04月15日
Master ground resistance testing with digital testers. Covers 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire fall-of-potential methods, soil resistivity measurement, and dual-clamp testing for comprehensive grounding system verification.
Understanding Ground Resistance and Why Testing Matters
Ground resistance is a measure of how effectively an electrical grounding system can dissipate fault current into the earth. A low ground resistance value ensures that fault currents flow safely to ground, enabling protective devices to operate quickly and preventing dangerous voltage buildup on equipment enclosures, structures, and other conductive surfaces.
Regular ground resistance testing is required by electrical safety codes and standards worldwide. Testing verifies that new installations meet design specifications, monitors the condition of existing grounding systems over time, and identifies degradation caused by corrosion, soil changes, or physical damage to ground conductors.
Measurement Methods Explained
The 2-wire method provides a simplified measurement by connecting only two leads (the ground under test and a reference stake). While quick and easy, this method includes the resistance of the reference stake in the reading, making it less accurate than multi-wire methods. It is useful for approximate checks and situations where only one auxiliary stake is available.
The 3-wire fall-of-potential method is the industry standard for ground resistance measurement. Three connections are made: the ground under test, a current stake driven at a distance, and a potential stake positioned between them. By measuring the voltage gradient in the soil, this method provides accurate ground resistance values independent of auxiliary stake resistance.
The 4-wire method eliminates lead resistance from the measurement by using separate current and potential lead pairs. This method provides the highest accuracy and is recommended for measuring very low ground resistance values where lead resistance could introduce significant error.
Portable Digital Ground Resistance Testers: EK-C300 Series
The EK-C304 provides essential 2-wire and 3-wire measurement capability with a resistance range of 0.00 ohm to 2000 ohm and AC/DC voltage measurement up to 300V. This compact instrument is ideal for routine ground resistance checks at commercial and industrial facilities.
The EK-C300 expands functionality with 400-group data storage for systematic testing programs, a wider voltage range (0 to 600V), and the same 0.00 ohm to 2000 ohm resistance range. For high-resolution measurements, the EK-C310 extends the resistance range to 30 kohm with 0.001 ohm resolution, adds AC/DC voltage capability up to 600V, and includes a waterproof instrument case, lithium battery, USB and Bluetooth communication, and 400-group data storage.
Soil Resistivity Testing: EK-C300B and EK-C310C
Soil resistivity measurement is essential for grounding system design. The 4-wire Wenner method determines the electrical resistance of soil at a given location, providing the data needed to design ground electrode systems that achieve target resistance values.
The EK-C304B and EK-C300B add 4-wire measurement and soil resistivity capability (0.00 ohm-m to 9999 kohm-m) to the basic ground resistance functions. The EK-C310C provides the most complete portable testing package with 2/3/4-wire ground resistance, soil resistivity, AC/DC voltage measurement, waterproof case, lithium battery, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Dual-Clamp Ground Resistance Testers: EK-C320 Series
The EK-C320 combines conventional stake-type testing with dual-clamp measurement capability. The dual-clamp method uses two current clamps to inject and measure test signals without any direct connection to the ground system, enabling testing in locations where driving stakes is impractical such as paved areas, rooftops, and indoor facilities.
With 2/3/4-wire, selective, and dual-clamp methods available, plus soil resistivity and ground current measurement, the EK-C320 is the most versatile portable ground tester in the range. The EK-C320C (2026 model) enhances this with a larger 70mm clamp, extended resistance range to 300 kohm, lithium battery, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity.
Large Grid Ground Resistance Testing: EK-C330B
For substation and power plant grounding systems, the EK-C330B provides the high-power output needed to test large, low-resistance ground grids. With a maximum output of 400V at 5A and resistance measurement up to 2000 ohm, this instrument measures ground resistance, ground continuity, soil resistivity, step voltage, touch voltage, and potential gradient.
The built-in printer provides immediate field documentation, while USB and Bluetooth connectivity support digital reporting. The self-test function verifies instrument calibration before each test session, ensuring measurement confidence for critical infrastructure testing.
