The Minimum Viable Tool Bag

Ask ten industrial electricians what belongs in the bag and you will get ten lists, but the same five categories survive every debate. These are the electrical troubleshooting tools that turn 'I think it's broken' into 'It is the bearing on motor M-204'. Skip any one and you will reach for it on the next call-out.

1. True RMS Digital Multimeter

The single most important instrument. Specify CAT IV 600 V, True RMS, 4½ digits, fused current inputs and a low-impedance V-LoZ mode that ignores ghost voltages on disconnected wiring. Pair it with high-quality silicone test leads — the cheap PVC kind goes stiff in winter and breaks at the most inconvenient moment.

2. AC/DC Clamp Meter

For current measurement without breaking the circuit. Choose a 32 mm jaw with True RMS, AC/DC capability and an inrush mode for diagnosing breaker tripping. Add a flexible Rogowski coil accessory for those days you need to clamp around a 200 mm² busbar.

3. Insulation Resistance Tester (Megohmmeter)

Routine PI/DAR tests on motors and panel feeders catch insulation degradation months before it trips earth-fault protection. A 1000 V model covers 90 % of plant work; step up to a 2.5 kV model if you maintain motors above 600 V.

4. Thermal Imager

The fastest survey tool ever invented. A 256×192 detector with 50 mK NETD finds loose connections, overloaded conductors, and bearing failures in seconds. Even a basic model recovers its cost on a single avoided failure.

5. Phase Rotation and Voltage Indicator

Connecting a 3-phase motor with reversed phases destroys equipment in milliseconds. A pocket-sized rotation meter takes 5 seconds to verify direction; a non-contact voltage tester confirms the circuit is dead before you cut into it. Spend the few extra dollars on a model with tactile vibration alert — invaluable in a noisy plant room.
