1000V Insulation Resistance Tester Spec Comparison

2026年05月06日

What to look for in a 1000 V insulation resistance tester — measurement range, PI/DAR automation, IEC 61557, and battery autonomy.

Why 1000 V Is the Industrial Sweet Spot

A 1000V insulation resistance tester covers the vast majority of commercial and industrial circuits — anything from a 230 V lighting panel up to a 600 V three-phase motor. Below 1000 V the test does not stress modern insulation enough to find weak spots; above 1000 V the kit becomes specialist HV territory. So most plants standardise on 1000 V testers — but not all 1000 V testers are equal.

1. Measurement Range

Pay attention to the upper limit. A premium tester reads up to 200 GΩ; budget models stop at 4 GΩ and saturate on healthy modern motors. For PI testing especially, the 10-minute reading on a dry winding can easily exceed 10 GΩ — and a saturated reading kills the PI ratio calculation.

2. PI / DAR Automation

Manual PI requires a stopwatch, two readings, and a calculator. Automated testers run the 10-minute test, capture the 1-min and 10-min values, and compute PI on screen. The same for the 30 s / 60 s DAR ratio. This single feature pays for itself in three motor inspections.

3. Lead Test Voltage Stability

Cheap testers see their output voltage droop under load — 950 V instead of the requested 1000 V — quietly invalidating the test. IEC 61557-2 requires the actual voltage to be within +0/-10 % of nominal under maximum rated load. Check the data sheet, not just the front-panel marking.

4. IEC 61557 Compliance

The IEC 61557 family covers safety, accuracy, and methodology for low-voltage testers up to 1 kV. Compliance is mandatory for regulated work in EU, UK, Australia and most of Asia. Look for the certificate number on the data sheet, not just a logo.

5. Lead Quality and Probe Set

The lead set is part of the measurement; thin or contaminated leads add a ground-loop that ruins precision on high readings. Look for guarded leads with shielded connectors and replaceable test probes. A crocodile clip pair is essential for hands-free panel work.

6. Useful Optional Features

  1. Variable test voltage (250 V, 500 V, 1000 V) for low-voltage system testing.
  2. Auto-discharge after the test.
  3. Bluetooth or USB log download for trend reporting.
  4. Live-circuit warning that disables the test until the circuit is dead.
  5. IP54 rated case for site work.

Buying Shortlist

  • Range up to 200 GΩ.
  • Automated PI and DAR.
  • IEC 61557-2 compliant, certificate on file.
  • Guarded shielded leads with crocodile clips.
  • Auto-discharge and live-circuit lockout.
