Transformer Turns Ratio Field Check — Spotting Tap and Winding Faults

The turns ratio is a transformer's fingerprint. A field check reveals winding and tap faults early.

The Transformer's Fingerprint

A transformer's turns ratio is determined by its winding design and should match the nameplate at every tap position. When it does not, something is wrong — a shorted turn, a wrong tap connection, or a winding fault. A transformer turns ratio field check compares measured ratio against nameplate to catch these faults at commissioning and during maintenance.

1. What the Turns Ratio Tells You

  • Matches nameplate: windings and tap connections are correct.
  • Off by a small percentage: possible shorted turns or measurement error.
  • Off by a tap step: wrong tap-changer position or connection.
  • Wildly off or open: broken winding or lead.

2. The Measurement Principle

  1. A known voltage is applied to one winding.
  2. The induced voltage on the other winding is measured.
  3. The ratio of the two voltages equals the turns ratio.
  4. Compare against nameplate at every tap position.

3. Testing Every Tap

The tap changer must be exercised through every position and the ratio checked at each. A ratio that is correct at nominal but wrong at an extreme tap points to a tap-changer contact problem.

4. Supporting Tests

  • Winding resistance to confirm lead and connection integrity.
  • Insulation resistance with the EK-C350 for winding-to-winding and winding-to-earth.
  • Magnetising current to detect core or shorted-turn issues.

5. Interpreting Together

No single test is conclusive. A small ratio error combined with elevated magnetising current strongly suggests a shorted turn. Read the tests as a set, and compare against previous results and the sister transformer where available.

6. Documentation

  • Record ratio at every tap against nameplate.
  • Note deviation percentage and verdict.
  • Attach calibration references for the instruments used.
