Rogowski Coil Sensor: Principles and Industrial Use Cases
2026年04月21日
Rogowski coil sensors measure AC and transient currents without saturation. Principles and industrial use cases.
What Is a Rogowski Coil
A Rogowski coil is an air-core toroidal winding that surrounds a conductor and produces an output voltage proportional to the time derivative of the enclosed current. Because there is no iron core, the device cannot saturate, making it ideal for measuring large or rapidly changing currents.
The Integrator
To recover the actual current waveform, the coil output is fed into an electronic integrator with very low drift. Modern Rogowski instruments use active integrators with DC servo correction, achieving phase accuracy better than 0.5 degrees and bandwidth from 1 Hz to 20 kHz.
Key Advantages
- No saturation: linear from milliamps to tens of kiloamps.
- Wide bandwidth: ideal for harmonics, transients, and power quality work.
- Flexible form factor: opens to fit large or oddly shaped conductors.
- Galvanic isolation: safer than current shunts on high-voltage systems.
Industrial Use Cases
- Switchgear retrofit projects where space is limited.
- Arc furnace and induction melter current monitoring.
- Lightning current measurement in protection systems.
- Power quality analysis on bus risers and generator outputs.
- Pulse current measurement in research and test labs.
Limitations to Understand
Rogowski coils respond to AC and transients but not to steady DC. They also have small thermal and positional sensitivities. Center the coil on the conductor and avoid neighboring high-current paths within one diameter.
EK Series
EK flexible coil current meters integrate Rogowski sensing, true RMS computation, harmonic spectrum (up to the 50th order), and Bluetooth-enabled PDF report generation in a single field-ready package.
