Oscilloscope Selection for Field Engineers
2026年05月06日
A field-engineer's framework for choosing an oscilloscope, from bandwidth and sample rate to isolation and battery life.
Lab Scope vs Field Scope
A bench oscilloscope on a wheeled cart and a field-service scope are different tools that share a name. Lab scopes optimise for vertical resolution and software depth; field scopes are picked for ruggedness, isolation, and sustained battery life. The mismatch is the biggest source of buyer's remorse on procurement boards.
1. Bandwidth — and the Rise-Time Rule
The classic rule says scope bandwidth should be five times the highest signal frequency you measure. For square-wave digital edges, an even better rule uses rise time:
Required bandwidth (MHz) ≈ 0.35 / fastest rise time (μs)
So a 100 ns edge demands ≥ 350 MHz bandwidth — anything less rounds the corners and hides ringing.
2. Sample Rate Should Be 5× Bandwidth
Real-time sample rate must be at least 5× bandwidth to avoid aliasing on single-shot events. A 200 MHz scope needs ≥ 1 GS/s. Sample rate per channel matters: many vendors quote the maximum that one channel achieves while the rest are turned off.
3. Channels — Two, Four, or Mixed?
- 2 analog — basic VFD or motor drive work.
- 4 analog — power-electronic switching where you need V, I, gate-drive and reference simultaneously.
- 2 + 16 logic (MSO) — embedded control and bus debugging on plant PLCs.
4. Channel-to-Channel Isolation Is the Killer Feature
Standard scope channels share ground. Connecting two probes to different points on a 3-phase bridge will short-circuit the inverter through the scope chassis — and you will replace the scope. A handheld oscilloscope for field use with isolated inputs (typically CAT III 1000 V per channel) lets you probe high-side and low-side switches at the same time, safely.
5. Battery Life and Display
Eight hours minimum on a fresh charge. A 7-inch sunlight-readable touchscreen, IP54 case, and flying-lead probe set turn an electrical lab toy into a substation-ready instrument. EK field scopes ship with both BNC and shrouded-banana lead sets in a hard case.
Field-Engineer Spec Sheet
- Bandwidth = 5× highest signal, or 0.35 / rise-time.
- Sample rate ≥ 5× bandwidth, per channel.
- 4 channels for power-electronics work.
- Isolated inputs, CAT III 1000 V minimum.
- ≥ 8 h battery, IP54, 7″ display.
