Lineman Personal Protective Equipment — A Complete PPE Stack

Lineman PPE is a stack — every layer covers a different failure mode. Here is the complete architecture.

The PPE Stack Architecture

A complete lineman personal protective equipment stack covers five failure modes: electric field exposure, contact, arc flash, falls, and visibility. EK Instruments provides Layer 1 (detection); the other four come from specialised PPE suppliers but must be coordinated.

Layer 1 — Active Detection

  • Wrist alarm A186 for general lineman work.
  • Arm alarm A187 for substation and switchyard.
  • Detection 40 V to 500 kV in five sensitivity steps.
  • Worn for the entire shift.

Layer 2 — Insulating Gloves and Sleeves

Class 2 (17 kV), Class 4 (36 kV) per IEEE 1903. Re-tested every 6 months by accredited lab.

Layer 3 — Arc-Flash Suit

  1. Cal/cm² rating must exceed incident energy at the working point.
  2. Hood with face shield rated for the same.
  3. Arc-rated balaclava and gloves underneath.

Layer 4 — Fall Protection

Body harness with shock-absorbing lanyard, rated for the structure type. Climbing strap for pole work; positioning belt for substation.

Layer 5 — Visibility

Hi-vis vest meeting ANSI 107 Class 2 minimum. Reflective bands on arms and legs. Hard hat in white (operator) or yellow (apprentice) per crew code.

The Pre-Shift Checklist

  • Approach alarm self-test (A186/A187).
  • Insulating glove visual + air test.
  • Arc-flash suit visual.
  • Harness webbing inspection.
  • Hi-vis condition.
