Leakage Current Clamp Meter for Detecting Insulation Faults
2026年04月21日
Use leakage current clamp meters to locate hidden insulation faults and earth leakage in industrial circuits.
What a Leakage Clamp Measures
A leakage current clamp meter measures the small imbalance between line and neutral conductors in a circuit. In a healthy installation this current should be near zero; values above a few milliamps indicate insulation degradation, capacitive coupling, or a true earth fault.
Common Use Cases
- Tracing nuisance tripping on RCDs and earth leakage relays.
- Predictive maintenance on motors with aging winding insulation.
- Verifying functional earth currents on VFD-driven machinery.
- Periodic testing of medical, food, and pharmaceutical equipment.
Measurement Workflow
Clamp the meter around all phase and neutral conductors of a circuit (but not the protective earth). The reading represents the residual current returning through ground. Walk the meter from the main panel down through subdistribution boards to isolate the faulty branch.
Selection Criteria
- Resolution: 0.001 mA for high-sensitivity work; 0.01 mA for general use.
- Range: at least 0 to 60 A to capture both leakage and load current on the same tool.
- True RMS: required because leakage waveforms are rarely sinusoidal.
- Data logging: useful for capturing intermittent leakage over hours or days.
Field Tips
Move slowly and avoid jaw vibration; modern leakage clamps can resolve currents below 1 mA but are sensitive to mechanical noise. Combine the leakage clamp with an insulation resistance tester to confirm root cause.
