Large Jaw Clamp Meter — Why a 52 mm Opening Changes Field Work

2026年05月12日

If you cannot fit the conductor, you cannot measure it. Here is why 52 mm jaws are the new field standard.

The Field Reality

EK service teams hear the same story every month: a technician shows up at a substation with a top-brand clamp meter, the bus bar is 45 mm × 8 mm, the 30 mm jaw will not close, and the day's work is wasted. A large jaw clamp meter with a 52 mm opening solves this — and the spec matters far more than most buyers realise.

1. What 52 mm Actually Fits

  • Aluminium bus bar up to 50 × 10 mm.
  • Parallel feeders: two 240 mm² cables side by side.
  • Marine shore-power cables (often 35 mm OD).
  • Solar combiner output bus (typical 40 - 50 mm).

2. The Hidden Cost of a Small Jaw

If the jaw will not close, a technician will sometimes loop a single conductor through a smaller jaw and assume the reading is right. It is not — the magnetic geometry is wrong and the error can exceed 20 %. A 52 mm clamp meter eliminates the temptation.

3. Mechanical Quality of the Jaw Hinge

Big jaws need a robust hinge; cheap units flex and the air gap between the two halves widens by tenths of a millimetre, ruining accuracy. EK engineers specify a 4140 hardened-steel hinge pin on the EK-G645 — tested to 50,000 open-close cycles without spec drift.

4. Jaw Tip Insulation

The jaw tips on a large-jaw meter sit close to neighbouring phases on dense bus runs. Look for moulded silicone tip guards rated for 1000 V phase-to-phase; the EK-G645 ships with this as standard.

5. Weight and Balance

A 52 mm jaw moves the centre of gravity forward. Good designs add a counterweight in the handle so single-handed operation stays comfortable for 8-hour days. The EK-G645 weighs 480 g, balanced at the trigger.

EK Recommendation

For utility, industrial, and renewable energy work the EK-G645 large-jaw clamp meter is the right tool when conductor size is unpredictable. Request an evaluation unit through EK service teams.
