Grounding System Audit for Data Centers — Reliability Foundation

In a data center, the ground system protects both people and millions in equipment. Here is the audit.

Why Grounding Is a Data-Center Priority

A data center's grounding system does double duty: it protects people from fault voltages and protects sensitive IT equipment from transients and noise. A degraded ground can cause silent data corruption, equipment damage, and failed audits. A periodic grounding system audit verifies the foundation that everything else relies on.

1. Main Ground Grid Resistance

The earthing grid resistance to true earth must meet a low target — often ≤ 1 Ω for a large facility — to keep fault voltages safe.

  • Fall-of-potential measurement of the grid where access allows.
  • Clamp-on testing for individual electrodes in the mesh.
  • The EK-C300 supports both methods.

2. Bonding Integrity

  1. Every rack, cable tray, and enclosure must bond to the common bonding network.
  2. Low-resistance continuity from equipment to the signal reference grid.
  3. Loose or corroded bonds create ground loops and noise.
  4. Measure and record each bond path.

3. Signal Reference Ground

Many data centers use a signal reference grid (SRG) under the raised floor. Verify its mesh continuity and its bonding to the building earth — breaks here cause common-mode noise on data links.

4. Neutral-to-Earth Voltage

  • Measure N-E voltage at distribution points.
  • High N-E voltage indicates overloaded neutrals or poor bonding.
  • Track over time as load grows.

5. Seasonal and Load Effects

Soil resistivity changes with season, and growing IT load changes neutral currents. Re-audit periodically and after any major build-out, not just at first commissioning.

6. Documentation for Audit

  • Record grid resistance, bonding values, and N-E voltages.
  • Compare against design targets and previous audits.
  • Attach traceable calibration references for the instruments used.
