Elevator Electrical Maintenance Test Tools — Annual Inspection Kit

Elevator electrical maintenance is highly regulated. Four test categories cover the annual inspection.

The Regulated World of Elevator Maintenance

Elevator electrical systems are among the most heavily regulated in any building. Annual inspection by an accredited technician is mandatory in most jurisdictions, and the elevator electrical maintenance test tools must deliver traceable, documented results. The motor drive, safety circuits, earthing, and door operators all need different measurements.

1. Motor and Drive Current

Modern elevators use VFD-controlled gearless or geared traction motors. Running current, phase balance, and inrush at start must all be within nameplate.

  • True-RMS clamp meter for VFD output current.
  • Phase-balance check across all three motor leads.
  • Inrush capture for brake-release start sequence.
  • The EK-G645 clamp handles VFD harmonics with true-RMS accuracy.

2. Insulation Resistance

Traction motor windings, brake coils, and control transformers degrade with heat and vibration. An annual insulation test catches degradation early.

  1. 500 V or 1000 V test from each motor terminal to earth.
  2. Pass criteria: typically > 1 MΩ in service, > 100 MΩ for new install.
  3. Brake-coil and door-operator insulation also checked.
  4. The EK-F598 combo provides DMM plus 250/500/1000 V insulation in one tool.

3. Earth Continuity and Bonding

Every metallic part of the car, frame, and shaft must be bonded to earth with low resistance. A loose bond is a shock hazard.

  • Low-resistance continuity from car frame to building earth.
  • Door-frame and control-panel bonding verification.
  • Main earthing electrode resistance with the EK-C300.

4. Safety Circuit Verification

The safety chain — door interlocks, overspeed governor, limit switches — must open the circuit reliably. Voltage measurement at each node confirms the chain integrity.

  • Voltage presence at each interlock with the EK-F598 DMM.
  • Continuity of the safety chain when closed.
  • Correct phase rotation for the drive supply.

5. Documentation

The annual inspection report must list every measured value against its limit. EK instruments ship with traceable calibration certificates so your report withstands audit.
