Clamp Meter for Refrigeration Compressor Diagnostics

2026年04月22日

Diagnose refrigeration compressor faults with a clamp meter: locked rotor amps, run capacitor, winding imbalance.

The Service Tech's Most Used Tool

For HVAC and commercial refrigeration technicians, a true-RMS clamp meter is the fastest way to triage a compressor that will not start, runs hot, or trips its overload. Three measurements—locked rotor amps (LRA), running amps, and capacitor microfarads—cover the majority of field calls.

Measuring Locked Rotor Amps

When a compressor attempts to start, inrush current spikes for 100–300 ms before settling to running amps. To capture LRA, set the clamp meter to inrush mode with a fast peak hold. Compare the reading to the nameplate LRA. Higher than nameplate suggests low supply voltage or mechanical seizure; significantly lower suggests an open winding or weak start capacitor.

Run Capacitor Health Check

Many EK clamp meters include a capacitance range up to 10,000 µF. To test a run capacitor:

  1. Disconnect power and discharge the capacitor through a 20 kΩ resistor
  2. Disconnect at least one lead from the circuit
  3. Read capacitance and compare to printed value (within ±6% is healthy)
  4. Out-of-tolerance capacitors cause high running amps and premature compressor failure

Winding Imbalance

For three-phase compressors, measure current on each phase under steady running load. The difference between the highest and average phase should not exceed 10%. A larger imbalance indicates supply voltage imbalance, a single-phasing condition, or an internal winding fault. Confirm with phase-to-phase voltage measurements.

Refrigerant Side Correlation

Combine electrical measurements with suction and discharge pressure readings. Low running amps with low pressures = refrigerant undercharge; high running amps with high pressures = condenser fouling or refrigerant overcharge. Electrical data alone never tells the whole story, but it points the technician at the right system in 30 seconds.

Documentation

Modern clamp meters with Bluetooth or logging capabilities allow technicians to email the test report to the customer before leaving the site. Providing a before-and-after amp draw reading is the best way to justify a component replacement and build trust in commercial service contracts.
