5 kV Insulation Tester Datasheet — Reading Specs Critically

2026年05月12日

Datasheet bullets hide the real story. Five spec lines decide whether the instrument is fit for MV work.

What Datasheet Bullets Hide

A 5 kV insulation tester datasheet can list "5 kV / 5 GΩ / Auto-discharge" and still hide whether the instrument is fit for serious MV work. EK engineers read every datasheet line by line — here are the five lines that matter.

Line 1: Test Voltage Stability

  • Look for: "5 kV ± 5 % up to 5 GΩ load" — meaning voltage holds at high resistance.
  • Bad: "5 kV nominal" without load qualifier — voltage may sag at high R.
  • EK-C350 spec: 5 kV ± 5 % to 5 GΩ. Verified on cert.

Line 2: Resistance Range and Accuracy

0 - 1 TΩ at 5 kV is typical. Accuracy specified at multiple decade points (10 MΩ / 1 GΩ / 100 GΩ), not just one. EK-C350 spec: ± 5 % at 1 GΩ, ± 10 % at 100 GΩ.

Line 3: Auto-Discharge

  1. Spec must give the time to discharge to safe voltage.
  2. Industry standard: < 50 V in < 5 s after test end.
  3. EK-C350 spec: < 50 V in < 3 s. Front-panel LED interlock confirms.

Line 4: Short-Circuit Current

How much current the tester can deliver at 5 kV. Higher = better — fights cable capacitance during charge-up. EK-C350 spec: 3 mA short-circuit at 5 kV.

Line 5: Operating Temperature Derating

  • Look for the curve — accuracy at -10 °C and +50 °C.
  • Bad sign: only 23 °C accuracy quoted.
  • EK-C350 spec: full accuracy -10 to +50 °C, derated curve published.
